Not the end of the world, but I have a HOLE in my eye

Published by admin under Pandemonium on March 17, 2010

Murphy’s law, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”, has always heavily applied to my life lol. I mean who gets a hole in their eye?! Well, I do. For example I routinely get a mole removed, and after 10 WHOLE DAYS of being stitched up it reopens. The nurse who checked the wound after removing the stitches was baffled when told that it reopened. This was a recent accident in my life that I’m comfortable talking about. Some I’m not so comfortable with blogging about. My life is awkward and filled with mishaps. I could give you several more examples, but it just so happens you don’t want to read a 10 page equivalent blog post now do you? I think my blog alone is a great testament to the huge black hole that I am. SO Going to the eye Dr. for my yearly check-up only to have my eyes dilated for the first time and then low and behold there is a hole in my eye somehow didn’t surprise me in the slightest sadly. I believe my response was “OH, of course there is a hole in my eye….”. It did however scare the shit out of me.

On to the hole in my eye.

Apparently because the shape of my eyes, VERY long (weird, I know), and because I am SEVERELY nearsighted (if the world were to face doomsday tomorrow and my glasses or contacts were destroyed I may as well give up and die that’s how bad my vision is….I’d never survive) I am prone to develop HOLES in my eye’s retina. Also I’m prone to retina detachment. Yes it is as scary as it sounds. Just the word detachment in the same sentence as a part of my eye makes me what to throw up what I ate for dinner.

The Retina specialist that I saw was extremely nice, and it felt like I sat through a science class learning about my hole and what not. I had to go through an excoriating test where I had to have an additional numbing eye drop besides the one to dilate my eyes and they used an extremely bright light to look into my eyes to see the hole better. The Dr. said it’s not an emergency, but eventually if left alone the hole would indeed detach my retina. He said we could either see each other every six months and chance me experiencing a “bright light” and then being blind which then would require a surgery I don’t even want to re-explain it scared me so bad OR I could have laser surgery to weld the hole shut. Yeah…I think I’ll go with option B. Right now I’m in a statistic of 1 out of 10 experiencing a retinal detachment(hate using that term) to a 1 out of a 1,000. I think I like the later odds better.

I’m not to sure about laser surgery though. Everything was explained to be and it all sounds unbearable extremely safe. When a Dr. tells you, “I’m not going to sugar coat it and act like it’s not painful…” you know you are in for a heck of a ride. He described it as the worst brain freeze ever. Not sure how I’m feeling about that. It doesn’t sound to bad it just sounds really trippy. Since it’s not an emergency even though I feel like it kind of is they scheduled my surgery for the 6th. I almost wish they had done it then because now I have time to think about it and worry wither I’ll see the “flash of light” informing me the retina detached before the surgery.

I could use a “hole” lot of support on this post. If you’ve never commented now is the time lol.

  1. alisha Said,

does sound scary. you will be alright though. my mom has had one of her eyes poked and prodded a whole bunch. she has/had something wrong with one of them and had surgery recently to fix the problem. she said she didn't feel anything and recovery was very fast and pretty much non painful. i can't remember what was wrong, but i'm pretty sure it wasn't a hole in her retina.
i didn't think there were pain nerve-endings in your eye, so i'm not sure why your doc has you worried that it is going to hurt really bad. but i dont know what i am talking about so i could totally be wrong.

are you going to be awake for your surgery or will they put you under?

i'm pretty sure my mom was completely awake the whole time. they just numbed her eye.

  2. britualreality Said,

Thank you for the reassurance ^_^. I don't really know anyone or heard of anyone having a similar eye procedure so it's good to know. I will be awake for the entire thing. They have to numb the eye so I'm assuming there are nerves, but I could be wrong lol :/.
