We’ve been busy here at Deep-N-Thought.com. We’ve upgraded our wordpress platform that we use, updated plugins so things run smoothly, and we’ll soon be updating the look and feel of the blog too. You may have noticed that pictures, and videos have vanished. Fear not, that was intentional. For my family’s privacy since the blog has gone from my family and close circle of friends to 400 some odd strangers visiting the blog I felt this was necessary. If you’re my family/close friend you probably check my pictures and such out on facebook anyways so boo-who. After thinking long and hard about what this blog is, where it’s headed, and what I want out of it I’ve come to a conclusion. I’m going to categorize all the stuff I’ve written thus far in the “In the Beginning” category & begin afresh. This change is of biblical proportions huh haha?

I like clean starts. It’s that feeling you get after it rains where everything is rejuvenated, clean, and growing. That’s what I want to focus on; growing. From now on this blog isn’t doing reviews per say. If I get the opportunity to check out a product I’ll give my opinion on it. That means I’m not going to get all technical after reading a book or a movie and review them. Not that you guys cared to much anyways. The randomness that you have come to know and love that is me however will still prevail, and will be categorized under “Pandemonium”. Appropriately titled. This blog is going to be showcasing Matthew and I’s Deep-N-Though Designs Zazzle shop that will feature our artwork on things from T-shirts to Shoes too. We are hoping to roll that all out very soon because as you all know since I’ve ranted about it a gazillion times, living off one income is hard and we’re experiencing technical difficulties. I’ll keep you posted on the shop so that you can buy lots of goodies to support us & give out as gifts for Christmas. Anyways that is all that is up with us here. What’s up with you guys?

I am over the moon excited!!!! Hopefully my writing for one of the largest social networks will get my writing some recognition. I got an e-mail a month or so back asking me if I’d be interested in writing for Technorati, and I was like SURE! So I followed all the necessary steps to get set-up as a writer. They redesigned their site from the ground up, and liked the idea of having their own articles on their site. I think it’s a great idea too because it gives bloggers like me the opportunity to be featured on their site. Now that it is launched you too can sign up too and write for them.

Give my article some love! Here it is my first article that is exclusively on Technorati

“Natural” Childbirth vs…..um “UNnatural” Childbirth?

I do not think that I am alone in this after all my google searches. It took more then a month of trial and error just to get my blog claimed on Technorati. Nothing I did seemed to work. I kept getting a 500 error message saying basically that my website didn’t exist. I sent in support ticket after support ticket only to be met with an automated response. It was clear I was going to have to resolve this on my own after the 2nd week of waiting. There was a lot of sifting through useless information. By useless I mean everyone saying the same thing. Basically saying “what’s so hard about putting a claim code in your damn blog post?”. To which I had no reply. It seemed like a surefire thing, but yet it would still give me an error code. Then I double checked my website address….yeah I’m pretty sure that’s my address. How could I not know my own URL for heaves sake. I felt like such a dumb-ass. What could I possibly be doing wrong? Then I thought about it. Technorati shortens your URL by taking off the ‘www’ or anything else after the ‘.com’. It made me realize it wasn’t pulling up my website address properly. Being sneaky I entered as my site address “http://www.www.deepnthought.com”. Low and behold there was a sign….a different error code(400 error to be exact)! At least it wasn’t saying that I didn’t exist anymore ha ha ha. Now it was saying my claim code was not properly displayed when they tried crawling my website.
I was baffled since I had the code in thee title of my post and in the body. I returned to Google searching that lead me to a site that explained putting the code in a “href” actually “coding” it into your website. Janice’s Technorati tips and trickswas an answer to my prayers. Yes I prayed about technorati…I bored god with trivial website nonsense.

2. If you are using the “a href” code to claim your blog

Make sure that the code Displays just the “Technorati Profile” text as a link in the Preview or after the post is published (See Example Below). Otherwise the claim will not work. The link must also appear on the Blog Home Page for the Technorati spiders to be able to find the code as well. Best bet: Place the code in at the top of a brand new post.

If it looks like this in your post in your Preview, it won’t work (plus it’s uuuugly!)

<a href=”http://technorati.com/claim/xxxxxxxxx” rel=”me”>Technorati Profile</a>

If it looks like this in your post in your Preview, it’s all good!
Technorati Profile

Thank you Janice! It was like a lightbulb went off in my head. I went ahead and put the “href” code in the body of my post. It was like instanoues. I had claimed my blog! All my blood,sweat, and tears had not been for nothing. I am now a technorati elite. I will now be able to monitor my rank in the blogosphere, and now people will know that it is I, Brittany, who is watching over deep-n-thought.

WordPress just rolled out with “Baker”; version 2.8. This is the first time I’ve ever had to update my version of WordPress, and I was pretty scared. I’m still a newb at all this website junk. It turned out there was nothing to be afraid of. WordPress as always had a very detailed how-to article. Basically as long as I didn’t delete certain files that they graciously listed for me from my site I was in the clear! Not to much has changed as far as I can tell. Reactivating my plugins went smoothly, but I did have a difficult time figuring out the widgets(sidebar stuff). All the active, and inactive stuff threw me for a loop. On top of that for some odd reason It’s not dragging and dropping how it’s supposed to. Fortunately at the top there is still the screen options so I just switched it to operate the old school way. What was the point then of me upgrading you may ask? Well…..I wish I had an answer for you. It does seem to function a lot faster, but I’m not sure it was worth all that work it took. I’m sure I’ll see the benefits latter on down the road when I want to switch my theme. That is supposed to be much easier somehow.

I haven’t blogged much, but I have been working on the site a lot in other ways. Recently I was reading about how to drive more traffic to your site, and discovered that I should create a site-map. I created one using this nifty website that gives you a free basic site-map for up to 500 pages. Not that I could even create that many pages 0_0! Besides for putting it in your public file with your host you can submit it to Google manually using your webmaster tools. It allows your page to be verified, and then it gets crawled on a regular basis. Why would you want your page to get crawled…..well that means that google is getting up-to-date information for their search engine about your website on a regular basis and that translates into more traffic. What is a blog without readers? Another thing I was pretty stoked to discover is that you can manually submit your blog for google blog search instead of waiting to be discovered. I don’t know about you, but I am always checking what is going on in the blogosphere.

It said that I’ve had over 200 page impressions. Pretty good for only being up and alive for a couple of months. I could use some suggestions on driving traffic to the site. Right now I’ve created a group on facebook, but that mainly consists of family and friends. Some of which probably only joined my group in support of me vs. actually checking out the website haha. As far as I know anyways…..no one has commented on any posts thus far.

After seeing I have two Plugins that needed updating on my Dashboard I felt motivated to better my site and doing the updates, but I am at a standstill because of all the code I need to enter into my template. Matt reformatted his computer to run Windows 7 last week, and has neglected to re-install my Dreamweaver. Can’t edit the php files without it. I’ve also been banished to accessing my computer remotely if I want to sit out in the living room and work on my site. If you’ve ever used remote desktop you know how slow it can be. I can’t harass him about it though because he already has so much on his plate. I guess when he gets around to it you’ll notice the changes of the Add/Share feature along with the new thing I attempted setting up tonight; Snap Shots. It enhances links with visual previews of the place your headed. I like the fact that you can “look ahead” before deciding if you want to follow a link or not. If you don’t like the feature you can just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out. I have to give my friend Veronica some props (I’ll put you on my blogroll too)! I saw Snap Shot on her blog that she just got started back up(I guess she was inspired by yours truly) and thought it was a nifty lil gadget.

So I did it! I purchased a domain. There was a lot of protesting from Matthew. I wanted to go with britualreality.com, but he wasn’t having it. After a lot of deliberation deepnthought.com is what we came up with. Deepinthought was already taken so the slang form seemed the next best choice. I also considered deepthought, but that was taken too. Curse you Frank! Haha I honestly figured whoever owned that domain would be some “Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” fanatic.

Oh well. It describes perfectly where I go, deep into thought, when I use this piece of the internet that belongs to me. It’s a place for reflection, and an outlet for my creativity.

I had a hard time setting the domain up. It was mainly because I’m stupid though. Nearlyfreespeech.net made it so easy a cave man could do it, but I had problems. I think it stemmed from the fact I already had the website up and running just using the url provided by the host. I didn’t have my dot.com assigned as an alias, and then I had to wait for the CNAME or something of the sort to be situated. Basically it was a waiting game, and I didn’t understand that so for a couple days I was panicked that I had done something wrong. It is working now ^_^!

I feel like I am learning so much from creating this webpage. Not that I can use this knowledge for anything….but none the less it’s a rewarding experience to see the fruits of my labor right here on the internet. I have a few more things to tweak on the template though, but I’m procrastinating. PHP files give me headaches hehe. For some reason on the sidebar of this template they have a link to a Payday loan place. I need to get that off of here. Also I have some code to insert into the footer.php file that allows the better functioning of my add/share plugin. Wish me luck.

After going through all the theme websites I saw a bunch that I really ended up likeing. I got to thinking, why do I need to have just one website design. WordPress makes changing your themes as easily as changing your shirt. Sure I could wear my favorite shirt for awhile, but then eventually change it up. Now, not only will readers come see what I’ve recently written, but they will come to see what I have on haha.

The theme I’m currently wearing is called sunray. As you may know if you’ve read recent posts I am in the process of reading “Twilight” by Stephanie Myers. This layout made me think of being in forks. The sun, which is rarely out there, cascading through the canopy of the trees. How beautiful!

Well, because John & Olivia informed me they couldn’t read it on John’s big monitor;that it is to small. I didn’t even think of resolution being a factor for the page. I was also informed that it has to much green in it. Actually I was asked “Are you going ‘green’” haha. Why does everyone think of me as this uber green lady?! Is it because I support natural childbirth, do not use napkins (everyone complains about that one when the come over), and am always talking about conserving? Anyways.Japanese Fleur just wasn’t functioning for me the way I wanted it to. The hunt for a new template is on. I’ve also got to find a plugin to do a site map that doesn’t require me to change file permissions to a 777. That just screams no-no. I don’t want my site to get hi-jacked. Especially since I just set it up. I’d feel like such a douche!

I was having a really hard time finding something that shouted “ME” when it came to the wordpress themes. Fortunately I found Top Themes and found this theme; Japanese Fleur. I somewhat feel like I’m being unoriginal by not creating my own theme, but at the same time know that whatever I created would not even looked half as nice. The theme was really easy to setup as well. It worked just like a plugin. I put it in my content-themes folder, uploaded to host, and whola! It showed up under themes when logged into to wordpress. Nice.Every day I am enjoying the well functioning wordpress application more and more. I keep seeing a bunch of ads for Artisteer on these free template websites. I may look into that, but it looks like it’s something that has to be paid for after free trial. I do not exactly have $49.95 available to make my website look pretty.
Now that I do not have the cookie-cutter original wordpress theme I need to move on to actually getting people viewing my website. I should also work on having something for them to look at/read when they get here.

Matthew caved and decided to help me out last night. I was having a lot of trouble getting my plugins installed through wordpress. I was trying to use their search and install feature. It kept giving me an error saying the file already existed, which it didn’t. After he took a look at it, and couldn’t figure out why it was doing that either he decided we’d do it manually. I don’t know why I didn’t do that earlier. After unzipping the plugin we simply put it in the content-plugin file, uploaded it to the host using file zilla, and whala! After refreshing wordpress it showed up in my plugin section. How nifty huh? I wonder if it had anything to do with my host. There is some type of safe-mode bull-shit. After installing it was completed I simply had to activate it and set up each plugin’s approite settings.

I feel like I am walking around in the dark bumping into crap when it comes to this stuff.

I’ve been playing with wordpress, and so far so good. I really like how you control practically every aspect of your site without having to have hardly any knowledge of html. For example you even have control over your sidebar using widgets. You’re able to drag and drop the widget of your choice to create a line-up that is satisfactory to you vs. a cookie cutter blog layout. Another neat feature I discovered is that by using the text widget you are able to insert html. That allows you to insert counters or even adsense code. The same goes with pages. You can create new pages, and put them in whatever order you want. Theoretically you don’t even necessarily have to be creating a blog to use wordpress. It’s a pretty useful content manager.

My next mission is this template….blah

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-6866725905556015";
/* 728x90, created 1/27/10 */
google_ad_slot = "2956612187";

This is the first post on my little piece of the Internet pie. Matthew and I were up until 12 trying to figure out how to setup MySQL database with my host Nearly Free Speech in order to get wordpress going. Their webhosting service is pretty awesome. You only pay for what you use. On the other hand you have to have a basic understanding of how to create a website. I think Matthew has washed his hands clean of this project & now it’s up to me to get a decent design up for my website. Pray for me. A lot has changed in the web-mastering world since I’ve last had a website in 2000……yeah long time! That was back when CSS was just being introduced.

I’ve also been informed that in addition to not helping me with the page that in order to have a website it must pay for itself. Therefore I have to find out fairly soon how to get AdSense going on my site. Until then I’m not allowed to buy a domain -_-. We’ll see about that though. It looks like wordpress offers some pretty nifty things called plugins, and I saw one on AdSense. I’ll have to learn how to use their plugins, and change this stupid default theme. Can you say boring….
